What will students learn about?
The course consists of over 80 recipes from Jamie Oliver, covering key topics from eggs and baking to vegetables and quick-cook meats.
You will learn essential knowledge and skills such as: kitchen basics: what equipment you need and the best way to stock your store cupboard, fridge and freezer, food safety and hygiene: knife safety, fridge management and rotation, how to shop cleverly: shopping lists, seasonal food and planning ahead, preparing ingredients and understanding confusing food labels.
What skills will students develop and demonstrate?
The Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Award in Home Cooking Skills (QCF) has been developed to give learners the opportunity to develop:
- The knowledge, understanding and confidence to cook meals at home
- An understanding of how to economise when planning a meal
- An ability to transfer skills learned to different recipes
- An ability to inspire others by transferring that knowledge.
How will students’ learning be assessed?
Home Cooking Skills is a single-unit BTEC qualification at Level 2.
Assessment is based on the student’s ability to plan and prepare nutritious home-cooked meals for breakfast, snacks, lunch and dinner, and helps them understand how to cook economically.
What grades can students access?
BTEC Specialist Level 2 Award (6 credits) Pass or Fail criteria.
What can students progress on to after completing this course?
GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition / A Levels/ BTECs/ Diploma in Professional Cookery/ Apprenticeships/ BTEC specialist qualifications may also enhance learners’ self-development by providing them with valuable life skills.
Students will be supplied with ingredients lists and must bring ingredients to practical lesson in order to complete coursework activities. Students can also be funded to attend Junior Chef Academy – a 10 week college cooking course.
